British Standard Cables (also known as BS cables) are electrical cables manufactured in accordance with and compliant to specific British Standards published by the British Standards Institution (BSI). Established in 1901, BSI is the world’s longest-serving national standards setting body. Although BSI is not a regulatory body, British Standards are often referenced within UK laws, regulations, and increasingly in international specifications across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

BSI is also the UK representative to CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) and a signatory to the CENELEC Certification Agreement, which ensures harmonized European standards are adopted by national standards bodies. Cable manufacturers demonstrate compliance with British Standards by applying a BS mark on their cables’ sheath. BSI currently maintains approximately 37,000 current British Standards.

BS 5467 and BS 7846 are the most commonly specified British Standards for 600/1000V armoured power cables. BS 5467 covers XLPE insulated cables with PVC outer sheath, while BS 7846 specifies the LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) equivalent for fire-sensitive installations.
