Railway and metro power cables are specialized electrical cables engineered for the unique demands of rail transportation infrastructure. These cables transmit electrical power for traction systems, signalling equipment, points heating mechanisms, and auxiliary services throughout railway networks. According to Network Rail technical standards, these cables must demonstrate exceptional performance in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), fire resistance, mechanical durability, and long-term reliability under harsh environmental conditions.

British Standard Cables (also known as BS cables) are electrical cables manufactured in accordance with and compliant to specific British Standards published by the British Standards Institution (BSI). Established in 1901, BSI is the world's longest-serving national standards setting body. Although BSI is not a regulatory body, British Standards are often referenced within UK laws, regulations, and increasingly in international specifications across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

What are British Standard Cables?

British Standard Cable, BS cable, BSI cable, BS 5308, BS 5467, BS 6622, BS 7211, BS 7629, BS 7835, BS 7846, BS 7870, BS 7917, BS 7919, BS 8436, BS 7671, BS EN 50525

British Standard BS 7835 specifies requirements for single-core and three-core armoured cables with thermosetting insulation rated from 3.8/6.6kV up to 19/33kV. These cables are engineered with Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) sheathing, designed to produce significantly reduced levels of smoke and corrosive gases when exposed to fire compared to conventional cables specified under BS 6622.
