1. Introduction to CSA 22.2 No. 210-11 Cable

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) sets out the requirements for the Canadian Electrical Code (Part 2) including flexible cords, elevator cables, and hoistway cables with a maximum voltage rating of 600V in the standard CSA 22.2. Standard CSA 22.2 Part 210-11 is designated for Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) Products such as heavy-duty cables with an increased voltage rating and a higher temperature rating than ordinary panel wires. The standard applies to both single conductor and multi-core cables, either round, flat, or coiled, which includes the range holding CSA, UL, and British Standard approvals.

Tri-rated cable is a high temperature, flame retardant electrical wire designed for use inside electrical equipment. Tri-rated cable meets the requirements of three different international standards: BS 6231, UL 758, and CSA 22.2. Combining three standards in one product makes tri-rated cable suitable for use in equipment that is required to meet both North American and British/European wiring regulations. This triple certification makes it highly sought-after around the world, particularly in the equipment export market, as it enables a leaner and more flexible equipment manufacturing process.

2. CSA 22.2 No. 210 Standard Classifications

CSA 22.2 No. 210 applies to single- or multiple-conductor, round, flat, or coiled appliance wiring material products. The standard classifies these products based on their intended use and mechanical requirements. Understanding these classifications is essential for proper cable selection in equipment design and manufacturing.

4. Voltage & Temperature Ratings by Standard

One of the key features of tri-rated cable is that it meets different voltage and temperature specifications depending on which standard is applied. UL and CSA give tri-rated cable a voltage rating of 600V, while it is rated at 1000V in the BS 6231 standard. Similarly, the maximum operating temperature varies between 90°C (BS 6231) and 105°C (UL/CSA).

8. European Harmonised (HAR) Designations

Under the European harmonisation system, tri-rated cables are also known as H05V2-K and H07V2-K cables. The designation depends on the conductor cross-sectional area and corresponding voltage rating. BS EN 50525-2-31 covers harmonised conductor sizes up to 35mm², with cables above this size generally manufactured to the same specification.
