Feichun N2XS(FL)2Y 12/20 kV — Water-Blocked XLPE Medium-Voltage Cable for Fixed Routes
A practical English engineering guide to the N2XS(FL)2Y single-core cable reference. The supplied record specifies copper, XLPE, water swelling tape, copper wires with counter helix of copper tape, longitudinal aluminium foil sticking to protective PE, radial waterproofing and longitudinal water tightness. It does not supply a conductor area or numerical electrical matrix, so those fields remain open for controlled Feichun release.

1. Engineering position
Copper, semi-conducting conductor screen, XLPE insulation and semi-conducting insulation screen form the MV electric-field system. Accessory preparation must follow released dimensions.
Water swelling tape, metallic screen components and the longitudinal aluminium foil / PE sheath arrangement are read as one system. “Yes” characteristics are preserved, but no test result is invented.
Evaluate it as a fixed shore-side feeder to substations, ducts and industrial loads. STS, RTG, RMG, reel, festoon and drag-chain routes require a dedicated dynamic design.
The record contains no conductor area, OD, mass, DCR, reactance, capacitance, ampacity, voltage drop or bending factor. These cannot be reconstructed safely.

5. Available versus not-supplied data
Data closure matrix
| Field | Current record | Engineering action |
|---|---|---|
| Conductor cross-section | – mm² | Not calculable from the supplied record. |
| Nominal outer diameter | Not supplied | Needed for radius, clearance, gland and duct-fill checks. |
| Approximate weight | Not supplied | Needed for drum, lifting, supports and pulling. |
| Maximum DC resistance at 20 °C | Not supplied | Needed for losses and voltage drop. |
| Reactance / capacitance | Not supplied | Needed for voltage-drop and charging-current studies. |
| Permissible current rating | Not supplied | Calculate for actual formation, ambient, soil and grouping. |
| Conductor / screen short-circuit current | Only 250 °C conductor limit; screen duty not supplied | Close the complete I²t chain before release. |
| Bending factor / pulling limit | Not supplied | Use the controlled Feichun method statement. |
Conductor cross-section - mm², no numerical product matrix is inserted. A released Feichun data sheet must add exact area, OD, mass, DCR, reactance, capacitance, voltage drop, current ratings, fault duty, bending factor and accessory limits.6. Cross-section and water-blocking system
The drawing is conceptual and not to scale. The aluminium foil is labelled as foil sticking to the protective PE sheath; it is not silently converted into an armour designation.
External water can approach through a damaged outer system. Radial waterproofing must be supported by the actual sheath, foil, screen-region materials and test method.
Water can travel along interfaces over cable length. Longitudinal water tightness limits propagation but cannot seal an open end or poorly prepared joint.
Seal both ends during transport, storage and installation. Apply approved joint and termination kits, preserve screen continuity and inspect the PE/foil system.
Water-blocking is not drainage. Duct slope, sump operation, groundwater level and maintenance access remain design responsibilities.
7. Electrical, thermal and fault design
Use 12/20 kV for insulation coordination, system earthing, MV terminations and joints. No size-specific capacitance is supplied.
The record gives -20 … 90 °C, 90 °C service conductor temperature and 250 °C maximum conductor temperature under short circuit. Actual route and accessory limits govern.
No ampacity is supplied. Calculate by formation, soil thermal resistivity, depth, grouping, duct thermal resistance, screen losses, ambient and load cycle.
Copper wires with counter helix of copper tape are an electrical screen construction. Bonding, induced-current loss, earth-fault duty, touch voltage and accessory compatibility must be closed.
Engineering closure checks
| Check | Known source basis | Required decision |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage coordination | 12/20 kV | Confirm earthing, accessories, joints and insulation coordination. |
| Thermal loading | -20 … 90 °C; 90 °C service | Apply actual ambient, soil, duct, grouping and screen losses. |
| Short circuit | 250 °C maximum conductor temperature | Use protection clearing time and accessory capability. |
| Water ingress | Radial Yes; longitudinal Yes | Inspect sheath, seal ends, approve joints and verify drainage. |
| Environment | UV resistance Yes; PE sheath | Check salt, chemicals, rodents, impact and fire compartments. |
8. Fixed applications and port-engineering logic
Application comparison
| Scenario | Fit to current record | Selection action |
|---|---|---|
| Wet underground / duct | Strong fit to the stated construction | Seal ends and joints; design drainage and thermal route. |
| Industrial fixed feeder | Matches stated energy-network application | Complete load, fault, voltage-drop and accessory studies. |
| Port shore-side feeder | Potentially suitable for fixed MV infrastructure | Review flooding, salt, UV, rodents, impact and fire. |
| STS / RTG moving route | Not established by this record | Use dedicated reeling, festoon or dynamic crane cable. |
| Shipboard / submarine | Not established by this fixed-installation record | Use applicable special standard and type tests. |
Matches the stated application. Confirm thermal design, route length, joints, drainage and fire strategy.
Evaluate as fixed shore-side MV infrastructure after flooding, salt, UV, rodents, impact and maintenance review.
The declared water characteristics are relevant, but end seals and duct drainage remain mandatory.
Do not assume fixed-installation performance tolerates cyclic bending, torsion, reeling or festoon travel.
9. Installation, handling and accessories
- Verify product code, voltage, exact area, OD, mass, drum label and end seals before unloading.
- Use only the released bending factor, pulling limit, sidewall-pressure limit and roller arrangement; none is supplied here.
- Keep the PE/foil outer system free from cuts, crushing, uncontrolled twist and abrasion.
- Seal ends immediately; water blocking cannot compensate for open ends or contaminated interfaces.
- Use the approved 12/20 kV MV joint and termination system; control semicon removal, XLPE preparation, screen bonding and stress control.
- Complete conductor resistance, screen continuity, sheath integrity and project-specified MV tests before energisation.
Accessory and installation release checklist
| Item | Why it matters | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Cable end seal | Stops water entering during storage, pulling and joint preparation. | Required |
| MV joint / termination | Must match 12/20 kV XLPE screen and water-blocking construction. | Exact kit not supplied |
| Screen bonding | Controls fault path, induced losses and touch voltage. | Design required |
| Duct / route | Thermal and water environment determines service performance. | Project calculation required |
| Fire / environmental file | Matches PE sheath, UV resistance, halogen-free claim and site rules. | Product-specific evidence required |
10. Selection gate and failure controls
11. Feichun Cable certification and project assurance
Certification capability does not mean every N2XS(FL)2Y size automatically carries every certificate or declaration. Exact construction, market, size, voltage, test report and declaration must match the released item.
Close area, OD, mass, DCR, reactance, capacitance, ampacity, voltage drop, conductor/screen fault duty, water-blocking test basis, PE compound, foil construction, accessories and fire/environmental documentation.
Feichun can develop the water-blocked architecture as a project-controlled MV system for fixed underground, duct and industrial routes.
