The Mechanism: Container cranes (STS) have a trolley that moves horizontally, but the “Spreader” (the device that locks onto the container) moves vertically. The cable connecting the trolley to the spreader must reel in and out rapidly (up to 180m/min).

The Role of (N)SHTÖU: This cable provides power and control signals to the spreader motors. Because this is a vertical operation, gravity pulls the cable tight. If the cable is not designed for this (i.e., lacking a central strain relief), the copper conductors will stretch and break.
