An engineering guide to the YSY construction: PVC inner sheath, oxidation-protected galvanised steel-wire braid and transparent PVC outer sheath — high resistance to transverse crushing and impact, plus a magnetically effective screen.

ÖPVC-JZ/OZ-YSY 300/500 V and ÖPVC-JB/OB-YSY 0.6/1 kV: triple-protected PVC cable
An engineering guide to the YSY construction: PVC inner sheath, oxidation-protected galvanised steel-wire braid and transparent PVC outer sheath — high resistance to transverse crushing and impact, plus a magnetically effective screen.
1. Reading the designation
Y-S-Y = PVC inner sheath, steel-wire braid (S = Stahl), PVC outer sheath. JZ/OZ = numbered black cores, 300/500 V, up to 16 mm²; JB/OB = coloured cores, 0.6/1 kV with 1 kV insulation walls, from 25 mm². J = with GNYE (‘G’), O = without (‘x’).
Standard constructions, 2 × 0.5 to 4 G 95 mm².
Protection layers: inner sheath, steel braid, outer sheath.
Test voltage.
JB/OB from 25 mm².
2. Construction
The inner sheath is essential here: galvanised steel wires are hard and, without a cushion, would press into the core insulation under load. The transparent outer sheath lets the installer inspect the braid for corrosion or damage.

4. Steel braid versus copper braid
| Property | Galvanised steel braid (YSY) | Tinned copper braid (YCY) |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic permeability | High (ferromagnetic) | ≈1 (non-magnetic) |
| Low-frequency magnetic fields (50 Hz, transformers, busbars) | Effective attenuation | Limited |
| High-frequency electric interference (VSD switching) | Moderate — higher resistance | Very effective |
| Mechanical protection | High (hard wires) | Moderate |
| Suitability as PE | No | No (use GNYE core) |
| Corrosion | Galvanised; keep dry in storage | Tinned |
5. Full dimension and weight tables
All 61 constructions are listed, grouped by cross-section: JZ/OZ-YSY 300/500 V up to 16 mm², JB/OB-YSY 0.6/1 kV from 25 mm². Bending radii are calculated from the nominal outer diameter (6 × d fixed, 15 × d moved). The steel braid explains why weight is well above that of the copper-braided types.

6. Application envelope
Power, control and connecting cable in electrical facilities, for fixed laying and flexible applications with free movement, without tensile stress and without forced guidance. Suitable for dry, humid and wet rooms. Outdoor use only with UV protection; not for burial. Do not store outdoors or in wet rooms.

9. Certification and traceability
This cable is RoHS-conform, CE-conform to the 2014/35/EU Low Voltage Directive and LABS-/silicone-free during production, with flame behaviour to IEC 60332-1. FeiChun Cable holds a complete export certification portfolio — including CE, UKCA, VDE, EAC, ATEX and IECEx — and every certificate supplied is checked against the exact type, voltage, factory and standard of the order.
Routine tests
Conductor resistance, 4 kV voltage test, insulation resistance, braid continuity, dimensions and marking.
Type tests
IEC 60332-1 flame, sheath ageing, braid zinc coating check, oil resistance on request.
Delivery documents
Approved datasheet, test report per drum, batch number and length marking; drums supplied with sealed ends.
10. FAQ
Is YSY an EMC cable like YCY?
Different purpose. Copper braid (YCY) is effective against high-frequency electric interference; the steel braid of YSY is ferromagnetic and attenuates low-frequency magnetic fields, while also acting as mechanical armour. For drive EMC, YCY remains the reference.
What does ‘triple protection’ mean?
PVC inner sheath, galvanised steel-wire braid and PVC outer sheath: three layers against transverse crushing and impact.
Can the steel braid be used as the PE conductor?
No. Steel has a much higher resistance than copper. Use the GNYE core as PE and bond the braid to earth for safety.
Can it take tensile load?
No. The braid is armour against crushing, not a strain member; free movement only, without tension.
Why no outdoor storage?
Moisture ingress at cut ends can corrode the braid before installation; keep drums covered and ends sealed.
JZ/OZ or JB/OB?
JZ/OZ (300/500 V, numbered cores) up to 16 mm²; JB/OB (0.6/1 kV, coloured cores) from 25 mm².
