Engineer’s summary: this is the cable for NEC field wiring. Unlike AWM types (which may only be used inside equipment), TC-ER is a UL-listed cable type that may be installed in cable trays and run exposed to the machine without conduit, per NEC 336.10(7). It also carries WTTC (1 000 V for wind turbines), MTW (machine tools) and Class 1 Div. 2 listings in one construction.

1. Reading the designation

2-NORM = dual standards (UL/CSA and IEC/VDE). TRAY = tray cable per UL 1277. TC-ER = Tray Cable – Exposed Run. MTW = Machine Tool Wire per UL 1063. ‘G’ = with GNYE; ‘x’ = without.

10. FAQ

What does TC-ER mean?

Tray Cable – Exposed Run. Under NEC 336.10(7) it may be run exposed (without conduit) between the cable tray and the industrial machine or equipment it serves. This eliminates the conduit or armour otherwise required for the exposed section.

TC-ER versus AWM — what is the difference?

AWM (Appliance Wiring Material) is for wiring inside equipment only. TC-ER is a listed cable type for field wiring in cable trays and the exposed run to the machine. If the NEC or the local authority requires a listed tray cable, AWM is not sufficient.

What is WTTC?

Wind Turbine Tray Cable — a 1 000 V tray-cable rating for wiring inside wind-turbine towers and nacelles. The cable also carries the standard 600 V TC rating.

What is MTW?

Machine Tool Wire, listed to UL 1063. It confirms the cable is suitable for wiring inside machine tools per NFPA 79 (Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery).

Can it be used in Class 1 Division 2?

Yes. It is listed for NEC 336.10(7) Class 1 Div. 2 per NEC Articles 336, 392 and 501 — hazardous locations where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases or vapours exist only under abnormal conditions.

Is it oil-resistant?

Yes: UL OIL RES I per UL 1277 and UL 1063, and water-resistant with UL wet approval at 75 °C. The sheath is also largely resistant to acids and bases.

Does it need a screen?

This cable is unscreened. For EMC-critical circuits, combine with a screened type or add external screening at the installation.
