Power network and local distribution cables form the critical infrastructure that delivers electricity from generating stations through transmission networks to the final connection at residential, commercial, and industrial properties. These cables operate across multiple voltage levels: Low Voltage (LV) up to 1kV for final distribution, Medium Voltage (MV) at 6.35/11kV and 12.7/22kV for primary distribution, and High Voltage (HV) at 19/33kV for sub-transmission. In the UK, these cables must be approved by Distribution Network Operators (DNOs)—the regional companies responsible for operating the electricity distribution network from the National Grid to end users. The primary standard is BS 7870, which specifies cables for power distribution at voltages up to 36kV.

Fixed wiring cables are the backbone of electrical installations in buildings, designed to be permanently installed in fixed positions—fastened to supports, laid in conduits, or embedded in building structures. Unlike flexible cables used for portable equipment, fixed wiring cables power the essential infrastructure of residential, commercial, and industrial environments: sockets, switches, lighting circuits, distribution boards, and fixed appliances. These cables must comply with the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) for use across Europe, requiring specific fire performance classifications from Aca (highest) to Fca (lowest). The primary choice in fixed wiring is between PVC sheathed cables (economical, general use) and LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) cables that provide enhanced safety in fire situations by minimizing toxic smoke and corrosive gases.

Armoured cables, commonly referred to as SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) or AWA (Aluminium Wire Armoured) cables, are robust power cables designed with metallic armour protection for demanding installation environments. The armour provides mechanical protection where physical stress could damage the cable, such as direct burial underground, outdoor installations, or industrial environments. These cables are manufactured in accordance with British, European, and International standards including BS 5467, BS 6724, BS 6622, BS 7835, and IEC 60502.

BS6724 is a British Standard specification for thermosetting insulated, armoured cables with rated voltages of 600/1000V and 1900/3300V, specifically designed to have low emission of smoke and corrosive gases when affected by fire. This standard is widely adopted in the UK and internationally for applications where fire safety is critical.

BS6622 is the British Standard specification for single-core and multicore cables with extruded cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation for rated voltages from 6.35/11kV up to 19/33kV. These medium voltage (MV) cables are specifically designed for power distribution networks, underground installations, and cable ducting applications. The standard ensures consistent quality, safety, and performance across all compliant products.
