BUS cables, also referred to as industrial fieldbus cables or industrial ethernet cables, are specifically designed for high-speed data transmission in automation and process control applications. Unlike standard data cables, BUS cables are engineered to meet the stringent electrical and physical requirements of industrial communication protocols including Profibus, Profinet, DeviceNet, KNX/EIB, and CAN BUS. These cables form the nervous system of modern industrial plants, connecting PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), sensors, actuators, and HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces) in a reliable, deterministic communication network. The term "BUS" derives from the Latin "omnibus" (for all), reflecting the shared communication pathway that allows multiple devices to communicate over a single cable infrastructure.

The International Electrotechnical Commission IEC 61158 Standard covers digital data communications for measurement and control in industrial automation. It has been developed for industrial computer network protocols offering real-time distributed control. This series of standards sets out the protocols for the interconnection of automation and process control system components by fieldbus network systems in manufacturing plants.
