BHP Escondida Type 280B 22/22kV 3x150mm² Dragline Cable: High-UV Atacama Desert Mining
Geographic & Operational Context: BHP Escondida (Escondida is Spanish for “hidden”) is located in Chile’s Atacama Desert, approximately 170 km south of the city of Antofagasta. It is the world’s largest copper mine by production volume, producing ~4–5% of global copper supply annually. The operation spans over 4,000 km² and operates at elevations ranging 2,600–3,800 meters above sea level. Three draglines (each weighing ~3,600 tons, with boom length ~100 meters) are the primary excavation equipment. Each dragline requires a 22 kV main supply cable, with average cable runs of 1,500–3,000 meters from pit floor to surface substation. This is the most massive and remote dragline operation on Earth.
