The concept dates back to the 1980s and was first deployed commercially at the Chino Mine in New Mexico in 1967 using earlier-generation systems. Modern trolley assist has seen major renewed interest since the mid-2010s as mining companies pursue decarbonization targets. Caterpillar completed a two-year pilot at Boliden’s Aitik copper mine in Sweden, and Komatsu — partnering with Wabtec — deployed trolley-equipped 830E-5 trucks at Copper Mountain Mine in British Columbia, Canada.
