Fanuc A06B cable Yaskawa servo cable

In modern industrial automation, manufacturing equipment, and robotic systems, cables no longer remain stationary or occasionally flex as they did in traditional fixed installations. Instead, they must survive millions of continuous bending cycles as they travel back and forth within enclosed tracks guiding their movement, a system known as a drag chain, cable chain, energy chain, or towline system. These specialized cables, known in Chinese industrial terminology as 拖链电缆 (tuōliàn diànlǎn), represent one of the most technically demanding cable applications in electrical engineering. They must simultaneously deliver reliable electrical power and signal transmission while enduring mechanical stresses that would quickly destroy cables designed for static installations or occasional movement. The fundamental challenge lies in the nature of the motion itself. Consider a typical CNC machining center where the tool head travels rapidly back and forth along linear axes as it sculpts metal parts. As the tool moves, the electrical cables supplying power to spindle motors, servo drives, and control systems must follow this movement without tangling, twisting, or catching on equipment structures. The solution involves enclosing these cables within a segmented chain structure, typically constructed from plastic or metal links, that guides the cable’s path and protects it from external mechanical damage. This chain forms a continuous loop, with one end attached to the moving machine element and the other end fixed to the stationary machine frame. As the machine moves, the chain transitions from a vertical or horizontal suspended section into a curved section where it reverses direction and forms a return path1.
