Unlike standard cables that may fail within minutes of fire exposure, fire performance cables are designed to ensure that emergency systems in public buildings continue to operate even in the most extreme fire conditions, potentially for periods of 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the classification.

BS 8519:2020 is a designated British code of practice for the selection and installation of fire-resistant power and control cable systems for life safety, fire-fighting, and other critical applications.
