ATEX 2014/34/EU Explosion-Proof Certification
ATEX stands for “Atmospheres Explosibles,” the French term for “explosive gas/dust atmospheres.” ATEX 2014/34/EU is the European Union’s Equipment and Protective Systems Directive (Directive on Equipment and Protective Systems intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres), enacted in 2014 to replace the earlier 94/9/EC directive. It applies to all equipment sold within the European Economic Area — comprising the 27 EU member states, the United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein — as well as to third countries that have established mutual recognition agreements with the EU (including Russia for certain equipment categories). Cables qualify as “electrical equipment” or “safety-critical components” under ATEX, depending on their application context. Any cable destined for use in coal mines, oil drilling operations, chemical plants, grain processing facilities, or other environments where explosive gases or combustible dusts may be present must obtain ATEX certification before being legally sold in these regions. ATEX does not merely specify performance standards for the cable itself (such as flame resistance and ignition avoidance); it also prescribes the certification pathway, marking requirements, technical documentation standards, quality management systems, and mandatory third-party verification procedures.
