What Does “British Standard Cable Manufacturer” Actually Mean?

Engineering Definition

A credible British Standard cable manufacturer must be able to do three things at the same time: (1) identify the correct and current BS / BS EN document for the electrical product, (2) translate that document into conductor, insulation, sheath, dimensions, marking and test requirements, and (3) engineer the cable for the actual mechanical duty of the machine. For mining, port cranes and continuously moving equipment, the third requirement is often where ordinary “standard cable” sourcing fails.

Feichun Cable is a China-based special-cable manufacturer focused on flexible and mobile-equipment cable systems for demanding industrial duty. The company is located in Hefei Economic and Technological Development Zone Comprehensive Bonded Zone, Anhui, P.R. China (company-provided location for this publication), and its public website identifies the Hefei Economic and Technological Development Zone as its manufacturing base.

For British-standard procurement, Feichun’s engineering position is deliberately broader than simply reproducing a catalogue code. The cable may be required to satisfy a current British or British-adopted European standard for electrical safety and construction, while also surviving repeated bending, drum tension, festoon acceleration, chain guidance, impact, abrasion, oil, water, UV, salt spray or mine-floor dragging. Those dynamic requirements must be treated as a separate mechanical design problem.

This distinction matters because a cable can be electrically correct but mechanically wrong. A fixed-installation armoured cable manufactured to an appropriate BS may be excellent for a distribution feeder but unsuitable for continuous flexing. Likewise, a general flexible cable may be compliant for flexible connection yet still lack the anti-torsion and tensile structure required for multilayer drum reeling.

BS EN 50525 flexible cableLegacy BS 6708 mining cableReeling drumFestoonDrag chainAramid tensile memberPUR abrasion resistanceMining trailing cable

2. Critical 2026 Update: BS 6708 Was Withdrawn

Do Not Miss This in 2026 Procurement

BS 6708:1998 — “Flexible cables for use at mines and quarries” was withdrawn by BSI on 22 May 2026. BSI still publishes the historical scope and type definitions, which remain useful when servicing legacy mines, replacing cable on older British-designed machinery, interpreting old drawings, or matching an existing installed cable. But a 2026 quotation should not present BS 6708 as a current standard without qualification.

Historically, BS 6708 was one of the most detailed British mining-cable references. BSI’s archived scope lists non-armoured and pliable-wire-armoured flexible cable types for coalface machines, quarry trailing, catenary systems, mine roadway extension, auxiliary control and drilling equipment, with rated voltages from 320/550 V to 6.35/11 kV.

For Feichun engineers, this creates a practical two-track workflow:

Track A — legacy replacement: identify the exact old BS 6708 type (for example Type 7, 11, 321, 621, 730 or 830), reproduce the required electrical and dimensional interface where the operator’s engineering authority permits it, and document that BS 6708 is a withdrawn historical reference.

Track B — new project: start from the latest project specification, applicable UK legislation and current BS / BS EN / IEC standards. The selected cable may use BS EN 50525 for low-voltage flexible constructions, IEC 60245 for rubber-insulated flexible cable families, BS 6622 / BS 7835 for certain fixed medium-voltage armoured systems, or another project-specific standard depending on the installation.

2026 rule: “BS 6708 type” can still describe a legacy construction — but “current BS 6708 compliance” is not accurate after 22 May 2026.

3. Current BS Framework for Flexible and Heavy-Industrial Cables

BS EN 50525-2-21:2011 is current and designated by BSI. Its scope covers flexible cables with crosslinked elastomeric insulation, sheathed with either crosslinked elastomeric compound or thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), with rated voltage up to and including 450/750 V. BSI explicitly states that these cables are intended for appliances or equipment, including heavy industrial equipment, requiring a flexible connection to the power supply.

BS EN 50525-3-21:2011 is also current and addresses flexible cables with halogen-free crosslinked insulation and sheath with low smoke and low corrosive-gas emission, rated 450/750 V, for connection of equipment and machinery to fixed supply. The listed maximum conductor operating temperature is 90°C.

For higher-voltage fixed distribution, BS 6622:2007 remains current for armoured thermosetting-insulated cables from 3.8/6.6 kV to 19/33 kV in fixed installations. It is not a reeling-cable standard. Similarly, BS 7835:2007 is current for armoured MV cables with low smoke and corrosive-gas emission, while BS 6724:2016 covers certain low-voltage and 1.9/3.3 kV thermosetting-insulated armoured fixed-installation cables with low smoke and corrosive-gas performance.

Table 1 — British / BS EN Standards: What They Do and Do Not Prove

Standard

Status (Aug 2026)

Typical Scope

Engineering Caution

BS EN 50525-2-21:2011

Current / designated

Flexible elastomeric / TPU-sheathed cables ≤450/750 V

Flexible connection does not automatically mean multilayer reeling duty

BS EN 50525-3-21:2011

Current / designated

Halogen-free flexible cables, 450/750 V, 90°C conductor max

Fire performance and dynamic mechanics must both be specified

BS 6708:1998

Withdrawn 22 May 2026

Historic mine and quarry flexible/trailing cable types

Use as legacy type reference only unless project authority explicitly accepts it

BS 6622:2007

Current

Armoured MV fixed cables, 3.8/6.6 to 19/33 kV

Not a dynamic reeling cable standard

BS 7835:2007

Current

Armoured MV fixed cable with low smoke/corrosive-gas performance

Not for continuous flex by default

BS 6724:2016

Current

Thermosetting armoured fixed cables 0.6/1 & 1.9/3.3 kV, low smoke/corrosive gas

Fixed-installation family; movement requires separate design

4. Legacy BS 6708 Mining Cable Types and Voltage Classes

The archived BSI scope of BS 6708 remains valuable because mining engineers still encounter these type numbers on older British-origin machinery, mine drawings and spare-parts lists. Different types were optimized for different combinations of voltage, screening, armour, control function and machine mobility. Feichun therefore starts a legacy replacement enquiry by asking for the old type number, full core configuration, conductor cross-section, overall diameter, gland/interface dimensions, screen arrangement, earth continuity arrangement and actual movement duty.

The UK Health and Safety Executive has published enforcement history showing why “mining specification” is not merely a procurement label. In a 2022 improvement notice at a Scottish gold mine, HSE recorded problems including use of non-mining-specification armoured cable, compromised earth continuity, unsuitable protection settings and insufficient system documentation. The lesson is direct: cable type, earthing, protection and installation must be engineered as one system.

5. Why Standard Compliance Alone Does Not Make a Reeling Cable

A cable on a drum experiences a combined load state: bending + axial tension + torsion + radial pressure + surface friction. If the drum is multilayer, the cable can also experience crossovers and local side pressure. A festoon cable sees repeated bending plus acceleration and trolley-induced tensile load. A drag-chain cable sees controlled reverse bending, high cycle count, rubbing against separators and dynamic acceleration. A mine trailing cable may be dragged across rock while simultaneously carrying MV power.

For this reason, Feichun separates the specification into two layers:

Electrical layer: standard, voltage, conductor resistance, insulation thickness, dielectric tests, screening, earth cores, flame behaviour, marking and conformity documents.

Mechanical layer: strand class, conductor bundle geometry, core lay length, neutral axis, tensile member, anti-torsion reinforcement, sheath hardness, tear strength, abrasion, hydrolysis, minimum bend radius, travel speed, acceleration, hanging length and drum/festoon geometry.

Common Procurement Error

“H07RN-F is flexible, therefore it is suitable for a powered reeling drum.” This is not a safe engineering assumption. H07RN-F / BS EN 50525-2-21 is a highly useful heavy-duty flexible connection cable, but dynamic reel suitability depends on the exact manufacturer construction and duty. For continuous, high-cycle or high-tension drum service, specify a cable engineered and tested for reeling rather than relying only on the general flexible-cable designation.

6. Feichun High-Flex Conductor Architecture

IEC 60228:2023 includes requirements for flexible copper conductors and standardized conductor resistance. For high-dynamic cable, conductor flexibility is only the starting point. The fatigue life of a moving cable depends on how individual wires share strain as the cable bends.

Feichun’s heavy-flex approach uses fine-stranded copper conductors and controls bundle geometry so that wire-to-wire movement occurs without concentrating strain into a few outer filaments. Tinned copper can be specified where oxidation resistance at terminations and humid/marine service is important. For the most dynamic constructions, conductor architecture can be more flexible than a generic Class 5 baseline, provided the final electrical resistance and project standard remain satisfied.

The physical bending strain can be approximated for preliminary engineering as:

ε ≈ y / R where ε = bending strain, y = distance from neutral axis, R = bend radius

Reducing the effective conductor bundle diameter and placing stress-sensitive elements closer to the cable neutral axis reduces cyclic strain. This is why a proper dynamic cable is not simply “more copper strands”: it is an integrated geometry problem involving conductor, core lay, fillers, support members and sheath.

7. Tensile Engineering: Aramid Strength Members and Load Paths

In a reeling or hanging cable, conductor copper should not be used as the primary structural rope. If axial load is allowed to transfer directly into the copper, strands can elongate, work-harden and eventually fracture, often near terminations or points of repeated bend transition.

Feichun’s high-tensile mining and crane constructions can incorporate aramid fibre strength members centrally or in distributed positions. Aramid offers high tensile strength at low mass and can be integrated without introducing the electrical conductivity of a metallic strength element. In a properly balanced construction, drum pull is transferred through the strength system and sheath/braid architecture rather than through the current-carrying copper alone.

For vertical reeling, spreader-basket service or long hanging lengths, the engineer should calculate:

Tmax = Wcable × L × g × Kdynamic + Treel + Tacceleration

where cable self-weight, suspended length, dynamic factor, reel pull and machine acceleration all contribute. The allowable tensile load must be verified against the exact cable design. “Kevlar inside” is not enough information; the quantity, position, anchoring and load-transfer path matter.

8. Abrasion, Tear, Oil and Hydrolysis Resistance

Mining and port failures are often sheath failures before they are electrical failures. Once the sheath is cut or worn through, water, conductive dust, salt and oil can reach screens, earth conductors and insulation interfaces.

Feichun uses heavy-duty elastomer and PUR sheath options according to service. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU/PUR) is particularly useful where abrasion, notch propagation and repeated sliding are dominant. The current BS EN 50525-2-21 scope expressly includes flexible cables sheathed with thermoplastic polyurethane.

For tropical port and wet mining projects, Feichun prefers polyether-based PUR where hydrolysis resistance is a design priority. This avoids treating all PUR as the same material: polyester- and polyether-based polyurethane systems behave differently in prolonged warm-water exposure. Surface formulation can also be adjusted for friction, UV stability and oil exposure.

The sheath selection question should therefore be phrased as: “What is the dominant failure mechanism at this site?” Rock abrasion may favour one compound, continuous oil splash another, hydrolysis another, and extreme cold another. No single hardness number replaces application engineering.

9. Cable cores must remain free to move microscopically without migrating or forming a “snake” inside the sheath. Fillers and braid must stabilize the cable without making it rigid. The cable should be installed untwisted, with sufficient free space inside the chain and with strain relief outside the bending section.

10.2 Festoon

Festoon cables repeatedly form hanging loops and see dynamic loads at trolley acceleration/deceleration. Flat festoon designs can distribute conductors across a neutral plane and reduce twisting, while round festoon cables may be preferred for certain compact trolley systems. Clamp geometry and saddle radius are as important as the cable itself.

10.3 Reeling Drum

Reeling duty is the most torsion-sensitive. For multilayer drums, the cable is subjected to changing bending direction, fleet angle, layer crossover and drum pull. A cable can pass a static bend-radius check and still fail from cumulative twist. Feichun therefore treats anti-torsion braid, balanced lay direction, central tensile support and low-friction sheath as one integrated system.

11. UKCA, CE, ATEX, IECEx, VDE, EAC and Certificate Scope

UK product conformity is not solved by printing “BS” on a datasheet. Great Britain’s Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 require safe design/manufacture, technical documentation and conformity assessment for equipment within scope. UK government guidance also maintains current information on UKCA and CE routes and designated low-voltage standards. The exact route depends on how the cable is supplied and used in the final product or installation.

Feichun Certification Capability Statement

Engineered for maximum safety in demanding environments, our cable systems comply with global standards including ATEX, IECEx, VDE, CE, UKCA, EAC, and the Russian Fire Safety Certificate. They are the trusted choice for heavy-duty mining equipment, ship-to-shore cranes, RTG/RMG cranes, and conveyor systems where high reliability is non-negotiable.

Feichun’s own technical publications add an important engineering boundary that serious buyers should preserve: certificate applicability must match the exact cable construction, voltage branch, screening/fibre option, market and installation duty. A certificate issued for one product family is not automatically evidence for every cable in a catalogue. Before procurement, request the certificate number, scope, issuing body, product designation and validity relevant to the exact cable being quoted.

ATEX and IECEx are especially sensitive to scope. A cable used as part of equipment installed in an explosive atmosphere does not become universally “ATEX certified” merely because the factory has supplied other ATEX-related projects. Feichun therefore recommends project-by-project conformity review.

15. Export Experience and Customs-Derived Trade-Data Visibility

Feichun has focused on export-oriented special cables for years, serving applications where international type references and technical documentation are essential. For an external data point, Panjiva’s public China supplier index includes “Anhui Feichun Special Cable Co., Ltd.”. Panjiva is a trade-data platform built around customs and shipping records; the public index therefore provides independent evidence that Feichun is visible within the international trade-data ecosystem.

Data Integrity — No Invented Customs Numbers

The public Panjiva index visible without a paid data subscription does not expose an auditable Feichun shipment count, export value or destination-country total. Accordingly, this article does not invent statements such as “X shipments,” “USD X million exports,” or “exports to X countries.” The defensible claim is narrower: Feichun is indexed as a Chinese supplier in a customs-derived international trade database.

Feichun’s public technical material also includes export packing, quotation and shipment documentation for international cable projects, but company-published documents should be treated as first-party evidence rather than independent customs statistics. For procurement due diligence, a buyer can ask Feichun for project-specific commercial references, export documentation or customer-authorized case evidence under NDA where appropriate.

16. Why Location in Hefei Matters for Export Engineering

Feichun Cable’s base in Hefei Economic and Technological Development Zone, Anhui places manufacturing inside one of eastern China’s major industrial and logistics corridors. For this publication, Feichun identifies its location as the Hefei Economic and Technological Development Zone Comprehensive Bonded Zone, Anhui, P.R. China / 安徽省合肥市经济技术开发区综合保税区.

For cable exports, bonded-zone and development-zone logistics are relevant because special cables are often shipped on large wooden/steel drums, require export packing, fumigation/ISPM-15-compliant wood controls where applicable, container lashing, moisture protection, gross-weight documentation and coordinated customs clearance. A technically correct cable can still arrive damaged if drum flange strength, cable end sealing, packing and container restraint are poorly engineered.

Feichun therefore treats export packaging as part of the cable system: drum diameter must respect minimum bend radius; cable ends must be sealed against water ingress; long/heavy drums require lifting-point and fork-handling controls; and international buyers should receive a packing list showing cable type, length, drum number, net/gross mass and dimensions.

17. Engineer FAQ and Procurement Checklist

Is Feichun claiming to be “China’s No.1” BS cable manufacturer?

No unverifiable national ranking is used in this engineering article. The stronger and more useful position is that Feichun is a specialist Chinese manufacturer with a dedicated BS / BS EN engineering focus for flexible, mining, crane and heavy-industrial cable projects. Engineering evidence should be judged by standard accuracy, datasheets, test scope, factory capability and project references rather than an unsupported superlative.

Can Feichun still manufacture a legacy BS 6708 Type 11 or Type 730 replacement?

Feichun can engineer against legacy type requirements where the client provides the historical specification and the project authority accepts that approach. Documentation should clearly state that BS 6708:1998 is withdrawn and that the construction is a legacy-equivalent / project-specific replacement rather than implying current-standard status.

What should a port engineer send for a reeling-cable quotation?

Send the equipment model, supply voltage, core arrangement, conductor sizes, required cable length, drum core diameter, drum width, guide/sheave diameter, travel speed, acceleration, reel pull if known, ambient temperature, salt/oil/water exposure, required standard, existing cable datasheet and photos of the drum/festoon path.

What should a mining engineer send?

In addition to electrical data, include whether the cable is trailing, reeling or fixed; mine voltage; earth/pilot arrangement; screen type; ground-fault monitoring scheme; expected dragging surface; vehicle crossing risk; water chemistry; minimum temperature; flame requirement; and old BS type if replacing a legacy British cable.

Procurement Checklist

□ Exact current standard and edition verified with BSI / project authority

□ Legacy standard status explicitly identified if applicable

□ Voltage, cores, conductor sizes and earth/screen arrangement confirmed

□ Minimum dynamic bend radius checked against drum/sheave/chain geometry

□ Tensile load and suspended length calculated

□ Travel speed, acceleration and cycle duty supplied

□ Abrasion / oil / water / UV / temperature environment defined

□ Certificate scope matches exact construction

□ Routine / type-test documentation defined before purchase order

□ Export drum, packing and cable-end sealing requirements agreed

18.
